Beyond the Title Deed: True Property Rights for Women

In many parts of Africa, a woman’s right to own, inherit, and control land is
tenuous at best, often dictated by patriarchal customs rather than legal statutes. A title deed in
her name is a powerful start, but it is not the end of the story. True property rights extend beyond
a piece of paper; they encompass the power to make decisions about that property, to use it as
collateral for a loan, and to pass it on to the next generation without fear of it being seized.

When women have secure land rights, they invest more in
their land, leading to increased agricultural productivity and food security. They are better able
to withstand economic shocks and are less vulnerable to gender-based violence. Our work focuses on a
dual approach: advocating for legal reforms that are enforced at the local level and educating
communities to challenge the socio-cultural norms that disinherit women. This is how we build a
foundation for generational wealth and stability, one family at a time.
